York University

We prepare our students for their long-term career and personal success.

York University is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is Canada's third-largest university, and it has approximately 55,700 students, 7,000 faculty and staff, and over 325,000 alumni worldwide.

We worked as part of a team assembled by the marketing firm john st. on behalf of YorkU. The objective was to create a virtual means to explore the University’s campuses so that students unfamiliar with them, due to COVID-19 restrictions, could gain that familiarity before physically arriving. That way students who otherwise would never have seen the campus before would show up already knowing the layout of the University. Giving them a much more comfortable and enjoyable time while there.

How We Helped

We preformed the setup and hosted a Google Maps style online web map that individuals could use to tour the campus from their internet browser. The map featured custom points of interest, informational tags, and text. This was accomplished by hosting an Apache2 webserver that drew content from the Dynmap renderer.

We also assisted in the 1:1 scale recreation of several of YorkU’s campuses in the video game Minecraft. We wrote server-side software using Java that would allow a single Minecraft game server to scale up or down depending on user load. This allowed the virtual Minecraft campus to have the potential to seamlessly handle hundreds of concurrent users without the need for direct management. This was also hosted on our equipment.

In addition we also completed miscellaneous 3D modeling, rendering, and video editing tasks to provide the marketing firm with B-roll material.
